Christchurch guide

The best coffee in Christchurch

Christchurch takes its coffee more seriously than almost anywhere in the country. There's a proper roasting culture here — a handful of local names supply half the cafés in town — and a run of small specialty bars where the flat white is the whole point.

26 of the best across the city — densest through the Central City and Addington, with roasters and standouts out in Lyttelton, St Albans, New Brighton and the southern suburbs. Some roast on site, some pour someone else's beans beautifully; all of them can actually make the coffee.

Most run daytime hours and the good ones get a queue on a weekend morning — no bookings, so the move is to get in early or take it to go.

Common questions

Where's the best coffee in Christchurch?
A few to start with: Unknown Chapter Coffee Roasters, Pilgrim, C1 Espresso, Addington Coffee Co-op, Under The Red Verandah. These are the coffee-first places — the roasters and specialty bars people go to for the cup, not the café that happens to serve one.
Which Christchurch cafés roast their own beans?
A good number here do — Addington Coffee Co-op, Unknown Chapter, C4 and Yellow roast on site, and the city's big names like Switch, Coffee Supreme and Black & White supply half the town. If you want beans to take home, these are the ones to ask.
Where do the coffee snobs go?
The small specialty bars — Pilgrim, Espresso Studio, Little Merchants, Coffee Embassy — where it's more about the pour than the plate. For the all-rounders with a serious cup and a full menu, C1, Addington Co-op and Vic's have been at it for years.
